CREAMARE – Linking creativity, culture and media technologies in the transnational co- production of digital interactive products for the communication of maritime and underwater cultural heritage

Programme and Call: CREA-CULT-2021-COOP managed by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA)

The CREAMARE Project aimed at creating a trans-national and cross-sectorial collaboration framework in which cultural institutions, scientific and research bodies, creative professionals, and technology experts can co-produce Culture and Creative Applications and digital products to communicate, disseminate and promote Cultural Heritage, with a special focus on the Underwater Cultural Heritage, and, simultaneously, raise awareness about relevant social problems such as pollution and other environmental threats that affect the oceans.

The main results of the CREAMARE Project are:

  • The definition of a co-production approach, supported by an ad-hoc web platform, between creative professionals and cultural institutions
  • The involvement of cultural institutions and creative professionals through specific open calls, a residency program and remote co-working tools
  • The creation of a training and capacity building package for both cultural and creative professionals
  • The demonstration of the framework through the co-production of CREAMARE – The Game: a 3D serious game focused on the UCH

CREAMARE: The Game brings Mediterranean underwater archaeological sites to life in stunning 3D environments and exploration. Our seas are the planet’s most precious “museums,” preserving a wealth of cultural treasures like shipwrecks and submerged sites. Yet, they face grave threats from human negligence and growing maritime pollution.

In CREAMARE: The Game, players take on the role of divers to explore 9 real underwater cultural sites in the Mediterranean Sea. They must defeat a monster from the future by solving ecological challenges and puzzles related to the history of these sites. This first-person adventure game focuses on immersive exploration and engaging puzzle-solving within an interactive narrative.

The game has been published on two of the major online game marketplaces, Steam and Epic, and it reached about 80.000 players. Below the download links:

CREAMARE: The Game has been endorsed as a Decade Activity by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science and Sustainable Development 2021-2030.
