CULTURATI – CUSTOMIZED GAMES AND ROUTES FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE AND ARTS
Alongside tourism, the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) were among the sectors most severely affected by the pandemic. According to OECD and UNESCO reports, venue- and site-based CCIs—such as museums, art galleries, and theatres—were hit hardest by social distancing measures, as their operations rely heavily on human congregation.
Today, CCIs urgently need robust systems and management tools to strengthen their resilience. Representing 3.1% of the world’s GDP and 6.2% of global employment, CCIs are vital to nations’ social, civic, and economic well-being, as well as to innovation and cultural vitality. Recognizing this importance, UNESCO has called for stronger support to the cultural sector. In particular, it highlights the role of community media in fostering diverse content and expanding audience reach.
In response to these challenges, the CULTURATI project, funded by the European Commission and coordinated by Bilkent University, aims to develop, test, and validate an innovative online platform. This platform leverages state-of-the-art digital and emerging technologies to enable collaborative content creation for cultural heritage and the arts across Europe. CULTURATI serves as a global content hub, delivering material through customized games (Q&A) and curated routes, engaging end-users more closely with cultural heritage and the arts.
